Automatic Gear Shifting

This function takes all the factors including speed, cadence, and torque into consideration and shifts gears automatically at just the right time.

How to change Automatic Gear Shifting

Use the shifting switch to change the settings for Automatic Gear Shifting or change to manual gear shifting.
Even with "Automatic Gear Shifting" enabled, you can still shift gears manually. "Automatic Gear Shifting" has a function that learns operations performed manually. Eventually, it will learn to automatically shift gears at just the right time to match the user's riding style.
How to change between Automatic Gear Shifting and Manual Gear Shifting

Automatic Gear Shifting Settings

You can configure detailed "Automatic Gear Shifting" settings on the Customize screen in E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist.
Available functions vary depending on the unit configuration and exterior/interior specifications of your bike.
An example of how to configure the settings is shown below. See the manual for details.
Automatic Gear Shifting While Pedaling
Select whether or not you want gears to be shifted automatically while pedaling without gear shifting operations.
Automatic FREE SHIFT

Select whether or not you want gears to be shifted automatically while coasting without gear shifting operations.
Combining the bicycle motor drive and electric shifting unit provides a new gear shifting function that could not be achieved before.
Especially, in a situation anticipated to occur during mountain biking where the speed changes significantly such as in the midway down a hill, the gear is automatically shifted to an appropriate gear before you start pedaling. This eliminates the need for cumbersome gear shifting operations or pedaling, allowing you to focus on controlling your bike while challenging a trail.
An optimal gear ratio is always selected automatically when you go down a steep hill after climbing up or when you start pedaling again after hitting the brakes to ensure a smooth ride.

● Setting pattern 1)

Whether you pedal or not, gears are shifted automatically without gear shifting operations.
An optimal gear ratio is maintained automatically without gear shifting.
Convenient automatic gear shifting functions are available.

● Setting pattern 2)

This setting is for advanced level rides.
You can manually shift gears when you want to and keep your desired gear ratio while pedaling. When you are not pedaling, gears are shifted automatically without gear shifting operations.
An optimal gear ratio is always selected automatically before you start pedaling, allowing you to challenge an uphill trail after accelerating on a downhill without complicated gear shifting operations.
Riding Scene
Set an anticipated riding scene. The AUTO SHIFT and Automatic FREE SHIFT characteristics are optimized according to the selected scene such as riding on a flat paved road or on an unpaved road with steep ups and downs.
For example, if you set Auto 1 to "Pavement" and set Auto 2 to "MTB" using E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist beforehand, you can easily switch to the setting suitable for each scene while riding.
Gear Shifting Timing
You can set the cadence criteria for automatic gear shifting. Unit configurations where you can configure more detailed "advanced" settings are also available.
Advanced
In advanced settings, you can set gear shifting timing suitable for riding scenarios such as the following:
  • Stable (Lvl. 4 to 8): A mode suitable for completing a ride on technical trails.
When riding on technical trails, configure the settings so that automatic gear shifting does not occur frequently. This can reduce the need of responding to a shock or torque change that occurs during gear shifting, allowing you to focus on completing a ride on trails.
  • Standard (Lvl. 2, 3): A standard mode for various scenarios where the bike is used from urban areas to suburbs.
  • Quick (Lvl. 1): A mode suitable for cruising on flat paved roads.
In this mode, automatic gear shifting operates with increased responsiveness to terrain changes.
Carefully selecting and maintaining the optimal gear ratio can help increase the overall drive efficiency of the bicycle, reduce battery usage, and conserve energy, contributing to increased traveling distance.
Start Gear
Set the lower limit of the gear number that is automatically shifted to when you start after stopping.
Use this setting if the pedal force feels too light when you start pedaling again after stopping (e.g. at a traffic light).
Start Mode
Set the gear number that is automatically shifted to when you stop.
Set the desired pedal force for when you start pedaling again after stopping (e.g. at a traffic light).
Gear Shifting Advice
A message is displayed on the screen prompting you to shift gears at the time set in [Gear shifting timing].

Manual FREE SHIFT

This function allows you to manually shift gears even if the pedals are stopped.
Combining the bicycle motor drive and electric shifting unit provides a new gear shifting function that could not be achieved before.
You can manually select the best gear while switchbacking or coasting on a road with various terrain changes, which ensures stability and controllability during a ride.
It can be turned ON or OFF on the Customize screen in E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist.

Symphomatic

This function automatically reduces the assist power output at just the right time when shifting gears to temporarily loosen the chain tension for smooth gear shifting.
* This function is for internal electronic gear shifting units only. It operates automatically when conditions are met.

Multi-shifting

This function shifts gears continuously while the gear shifting switch is held down.
The number of gears you can shift with one operation can be limited by setting the multi-shifting upper limit.
The multi-shifting interval can be adjusted to your preference. If the gear-shifting interval is too short, smooth shifting is not possible and chain drop may occur.
